The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.
ILRI seeks to recruit a Rangeland Scientist to work in West Africa (based in our Dakar, Senegal) office, thereby expanding the portfolio of research for development in rangelands in Senegal and Mali, as well as some regional initiatives. We prioritise participatory and capacity building approaches.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The principal responsibilities of the rangeland scientist includes the following:
- Develop relevant partnerships with NARS, research institutes, NGO/CSOs and communities.
- Capacity building of partners, training as appropriate and development of training materials.
- Writing popular and scientific publications.
- Lead ILRI’s research for development activities in rangelands in Senegal and Mali working with other CGIAR centres.
- Write proposals and mobilise resources.
- Policy engagement and influencing at national and regional levels.
REQUIREMENTS
- PhD in a relevant area, such as dryland management, ecology, rangelands, pastoralism, anthropology, natural resource management or governance.
- At least 5 years working in research in West African drylands/rangelands including management, restoration, monitoring.
- Experience in policy and legislation engagement on rangelands/drylands in Senegal, Mali or the region
- Experience working in the region with development actors, Great Green Wall projects or other projects in development.
- Knowledge of One Health is desirable.
- Fluent in written and spoken English and French.
