The Africa Fish and Aquaculture Welfare Program (AFIWEL) is a continental initiative advancing ethical, welfare-centered, and sustainable aquaculture across Africa by strengthening fish health practices, capacity building, and applied innovation.
In 2026, AFIWEL enters Phase 3, its implementation phase, marking a decisive shift from frameworks and pilot activities to on-the-ground action. This milestone is being launched alongside the announcement of the 2026 AFIWEL Fellows, a diverse cohort of professionals drawn from South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
As AFIWEL scales implementation across multiple regions, the new fellows will play a critical role in translating fish welfare principles into practice, supporting local aquaculture systems, strengthening biosecurity and health management, and embedding welfare standards within real production contexts across the continent.
