One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) is a non-profit organization that works to address correlated issues of human, animal, and environmental health using the integrated “One Health” approach. Our mission is rooted in the evidence that public health issues are intertwined across the human, animal, and environmental ecosystems thereby requiring a holistic approach to effective and sustainable solutions.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to fill the position of Managing Director. S/he would oversee the administration, day-to-day operations, and programmatic implementation of the organization’s Strategic Plan. Other key duties include overall management of programs, operations, research, and stakeholders, supervising a team of technical and operations staff, financial stewardship and accountability, and implementation of One Health projects across areas of public health, animal welfare, sustainable food systems, antimicrobial resistance, and conservation.
This core senior management position reports directly to the Board of Directors – including the Board of Advisors (BOA) and Board of Trustees (BOT).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Board Accountability:
- Works with the Board of Trustees and Advisors to fulfill the organization’s mission, vision, and strategies
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to provide its organizational oversight functions and make informed decisions that advance organizational growth.
2) Program Implementation
- Responsible for executing OHDI’s programmatic and operational goals and objectives in a manner that aligns with the organization’s strategic plan and with the priorities of our target communities (and countries).
- Lead the development of annual work plans and budgets in line with the goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
- Provides leadership and oversights on the field implementation of all projects and research activities and accompanying monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks
- Identify and mitigate near-term and long-term risks that could hinder goal achievements.
- Engage with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) on inception, design, implementation and evaluations of projects and research that align strongly with our One Health areas of work.
- Oversee the development and submission of regular programmatic updates and M&E reports to the OHDI Board, funders, and stakeholders.
- Recommend and support new investments and program expansion/scale-up initiatives that align with previous and existing projects along our One Health work areas.
3) Financial Performance and Viability:
- Supports and contributes to fundraising and resource mobilization to support OHDI’s programs and operations and maintain financial health and stability.
- Oversees the finance personnel in fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position
- Ensures the fiscal integrity and statutory compliance of OHDI to the Board, funders, and other stakeholders including timely submission and accuracy of annual budgets, financial statements, and reports
4) Stakeholder engagement and visibility:
- Develop and maintain new and existing partnerships with stakeholders that align with our relevant One Health areas of work, including government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), local and international civil society organizations, donor organizations, private sector, community groups, professional associations, research institutions, etc.
- Improve the visibility of OHDI’s in the One Health community and relevant areas of work, fostering effective local and international partnerships.
- Serve as OHDI’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public.
5) Organization’s Administration and Operations:
- Responsible for the effective administration and improvement of OHDI operations in line with established guidelines and SOPs.
- Establish and/or support the review of employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operations of the non-profit.
- Support and implement investments in team development and culture, including creating new development programs/training for capacity-building and fostering a positive working environment.
- Ensure that systems and procedures are in place and being properly implemented, and also ensure the proper management, well-being, and safety of OHDI staff, and the proper use of OHDI resources.
6) Other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees and Advisors
REQUIREMENTS:
- At least a Master’s degree in related fields across the Medical Sciences, Veterinary Science, Public Health, Global Health, Animal Health/Welfare, Agricultural Science, Food Security, Environmental Health, Conservation and AMR
- At least 7 years of relevant experience working on varied and multi-sectoral initiatives in One Health or related fields such as Public Health, Global Health Security, Environmental Health Sciences, Animal Health/Welfare, Food systems/security, Conservation, and AMR.
- At least 3 years of demonstrated leadership leading a nonprofit organization, working in a senior management capacity or leading large-scale programs/research portfolios.
- Holistic knowledge, experience, and strong technical understanding of the One Health concept, the interconnectivity of One Health outcomes, and the operationalization of One Health.
- Demonstrated knowledge of networks in relevant governmental agencies, civil society organizations, both local and international NGOs, and professional associations, with the ability to cultivate such effective relationships across many levels.
- Resident in Abuja, Nigeria, or willing to relocate.
- Knowledge of and ability to analyze, plan strategy for, and implement large multi-partner projects
- Ability to thrive and manage a team that works in a collaborative, flexible, and resilient hybrid environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high-level leadership, and advocacy, and engage in healthy dialogue with diverse stakeholders.
- Capable of developing high-level strategies and detailed operational plans in collaboration with others
- Familiarity with program management cycles, workplans, budgets, and financial management models
- Clear, tactful, and effective communicator (written and verbal) with exceptional interpersonal skills when engaging with internal and external audiences
