Ponmo – cow hide meat – is a popular food and delicacy in Nigeria and across West Africa. But nutritionists and scientists in the region warn about the safety and poor nutritional value of this local delicacy. These concerns are particularly borne out of the methods of processing and unhygienic practices often associated with the food item.
In this episode of Africa Science Focus, SciDev.Net’s reporter, Royal Uche speaks with Dr. Abiodun Wahab, OHDI’s Program Lead (Zoonoses); Sherifah Wakil, Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Ibadan; and Obaisi Alaanuloluwa, an Environmental and Social Development Consultant for the World Bank on this topic. Discussions spanned across the toxic bacteria which often remain on ponmo even after cooking, the environmental impact of common local ponmo processing, while Dr. Sherifah Wakil shares findings from her latest research on the contamination of the meat and ponmo.
