One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) is a Nigeria-based non-profit organization that works to address interrelated issues of human, animal, environmental and ecosystem health through an integrated One Health approach. Animal Welfare, a core contributor to One Health, is one of our program areas where we seek to promote education, research, build capacity and support for relevant policy and implementation for improved animal welfare practices and standards. In this program area, we are currently implementing Project “Hen Welfare and Cage-free Advocacy”, which is promoting education of farmers and stakeholders on hen welfare and propelling movement building and action to maintaining, adopting or transitioning to cage-free poultry housing systems.
We are seeking highly motivated and experienced veterinarians in Nigeria to engage on short-term part-time assignments as State Field Officers on the “Hen Welfare and Cage-free Advocacy” project. The prospective Field Officers will work closely with our team and other stakeholders to expand and advance the goals and implementation of the project in their respective states.
Job Description
The Field Officers will perform the following specific responsibilities:
- Participate in project-related training and capacity building on Hen Welfare and housing
- Identify, engage, evaluate, inspect, certify, and enroll cage-free poultry farmers into our cage-free directory and hybrid Hen Welfare training program
- Engage supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels in corporate campaigns and enroll them in our cage-free directory
- Support the project team in training poultry producers and stakeholders in the value chain in OHDI’s Hen Welfare and Cage-free transition program
- Act as liaison between OHDI and poultry farm associations, farmer groups, and communities engaging them in community building and advocacy for hen welfare and cage-free farm systems
- Produce reports and other project deliverables as relevant
An Ideal candidate will possess
- A degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with at least 3 years of experience in the poultry industry, poultry health, and farm management-related jobs
- Knowledge and application of animal welfare principles – and a strong understanding of the welfare needs of poultry (and hens) would be a great advantage
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing successful advocacy campaigns or behavior change interventions
- Proven network and engagements with industry players and policymakers (Government officials) in the poultry sector
- Expertise in writing and contribution to technical reports
Must be based in any of the following states Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, FCT Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Akwa-Ibom, Sokoto, Kwara, Delta and Edo states
