One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI)

Our History

Our Story

From a personal vision to a continental movement for One Health.

One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) began in February 2016 as MyAnimalMyHealth, a blog founded by Dr. Kikiope Oluwarore, a veterinarian and One Health professional. The blog provided news and insights on the interconnections between animal and public health, quickly gaining traction among professionals and the general public.

As readership and influence grew, the platform evolved beyond storytelling into investigative journalism and health advocacy, delivering impactful projects such as:

  • Project Abattoir Nigeria (2017) – supported by Code for Africa’s ImpactAFRICA Program, which exposed unsafe and unethical slaughterhouse practices and advocated for reform in Nigeria’s meat industry.
  • Project Fish and Oceans (2018) – supported by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, which investigated Nigeria’s paradox of heavy reliance on imported fish despite vast marine, ocean, and aquaculture resources..

These projects marked a turning point, transforming a blog into a movement for integrated health, research, and advocacy.

Therefore, on June 21, 2019, OHDI was formally registered as a nonprofit organization with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC/IT/NO 130955) and officially began operations on 1st January 2020. With this milestone, OHDI expanded its mission to encompass the full spectrum of human, animal, plant, and environmental health, applying the One Health approach to advance public health and sustainable development.

Today, OHDI implements local, pan-African, and international programs, leading research, digital innovation, and policy advocacy that strengthen health systems, improves agricultural and ecosystem resilience with sustainable development outcomes and impact. What began as a blog has grown into a global nonprofit shaping the future of One Health integration across Africa and beyond.
