One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) is a non-profit organization that works to address correlated issues of human, animal, and environmental health using the integrated “One Health” approach. Animal Welfare is one of our core areas of work, which we recognize as an important contributor to One Health. Under this program, we are scaling up our Fish Welfare education, interventions and integration into fish production systems across the top 10 aquaculture-producing countries in Africa. We are actively looking for young, dynamic and highly qualified candidates for the Africa Fish Welfare (AFIWEL) Fellowship program. The AFIWEL Fellows will participate in hands-on learning experiences on Fish Welfare and apply their knowledge to offer technical assistance in the progress, management, and execution of fish welfare initiatives and projects in their home countries.
Responsibilities:
- Engage in tailored learning and capacity building on global standards of Fish Welfare
- Contribute to the development and publication of country-specific Fish Welfare training guide and other important relevant documentation on fish welfare
- Provide technical support in the planning and implementation of in-country fish welfare related programs, initiatives, and stakeholder meetings
- Collaborate with local authorities, local and international organizations and stakeholders to promote fish health and welfare
- Carry out other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
We expect our potential Fellows to have ticked most (if not all) these requirements.
- At least, a first degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, or other related fields
- A masters degree and/or extensive experience in fish production and management will be an added advantage
- At least 3 years of productive work experience in one or more areas of farmed fish production, health, welfare, and management. Additional experience with capture/wild fisheries and other aquatic life will be an added advantage.
- Must be proficient in English as the fellowship will be held entirely in English language at this time
- Must be a self-starter, with conceptual, analytical, and innovative problem-solving ability
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including in public speaking, writing technical reports, and interpersonal communications
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with team members, local and international stakeholders, external collaborators, and people in a multicultural, multi-interest, multi-ethnic environment
- Must be resident in any of the 10 priority countries (Egypt, Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Tunisia, Kenya, Zambia, Madagascar, Malawi, South Africa) and proficient in a hybrid work mode
- Must be between the ages of 21 to 40
