To celebrate and contribute to the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) 2021, OHDI will be organizing a panel discussion which will be hosted on the AMR Relay platform on November 24, 2021, at 2:15 PM (WAT). The panel consists of 5 key members of OHDI’s One Health Advocacy and Mentorship (OHAM) 2020 Fellows who are One Health professionals from relevant sectors including Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, and Microbiology.
They would discuss the topic – “Combating Antimicrobial Resistance through the One Health Approach in Nigeria: Challenges and Opportunities for Improvement“
Abstract of the Panel Discussion:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) as one of the top 10 global public health issues of importance. Currently, AMR causes 700,000 global deaths and is projected to lead to 10 million global deaths by 2050. In order to achieve Goal 3 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), AMR needs urgent attention that can be best tackled through multisectoral, collaborative, and transdisciplinary approaches at different levels (local, regional, national and global) across the environmental, animal and human health sectors (One Health). In response to this, In May 2015, the World Health Organization launched a global action plan on antimicrobial resistance at the World Health Assembly. This was adopted by several countries including Nigeria. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, in collaboration with Federal Ministries of Health; Environment; Agricultural and Rural Development launched “The National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance (2017-2022)” based on the One Health concept and “One Health Strategic Plan (2019-2023)”.
This panel discussion aims to access how far the Nigerian health system has gone with implementing these policies, outlining the challenges and opportunities for improvement. This panel discussion is championed by stellar and progressive 2020 OHAM fellows.

Name: Oluwatosin Akinwotu
Occupation: One Health Advisor, Commonwealth Pharmacists Association, United Kingdom.
Bio: Oluwatosin Akinwotu is the One Health Advisor at the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA), UK. He is the founder and project coordinator at Combat Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative (CARI-X), a non-governmental organization that focuses on AMR stewardship using the “One Health” approach. He’s an experienced One Health and AMR advocate who demonstrates quality mentorship to young Africans on the subjects of One Health and AMR stewardship. He is currently a doctoral researcher in Environmental Microbiology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and he enjoys collaborating with professionals of various disciplines for policies review, research, development of management strategies and projects aimed at reducing the continuous proliferation of AMR locally and globally.
Name: Pharm. Chiamaka Jibuaku
Position: Pharmacist and Global Health Professional
Bio: Chiamaka Jibuaku is a pharmacist with over 3 years of experience in pharmacy practice. Chiamaka is a Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP) Scholar studying MSc in Global Health at the University of Gothenburg. She is interested in research/interventions pertaining to infectious disease, antimicrobial resistance, and digital health, and has contributed to a number of projects in this area both in Nigeria and abroad.
Name: Dr. Idris Ola
Position: Medical Doctor, Founder/CEO The Blue-Pink Center for Women’s Health, Lagos, Nigeria
Bio: Idris Ola is a medical doctor with over 8 years of experience in clinical practice and community health development. He is a sustainable development goals advocate, global health expert, and one health enthusiast. He’s a One Health Advocacy and Mentorship (OHAM) fellow with extensive local and international experience in public speaking on pressing global health issues. His research interests revolve around women’s health, One Health, and cancer prevention and control in Africa.
Name: Dr. Oluoma Agiri
Position: Veterinarian and One Health Professional
Bio: Dr. Oluoma Agiri has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and completed a master’s degree in One Health: ecosystems, humans, and animals at the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of London in 2021. Dr. Oluoma advocates for systems thinking in One Health and has conducted research on strengthening animal health services to improve economic benefits, public health, and animal welfare. She was a 2020 alumna of the One Health Advocacy and Mentorship fellowship and was awarded a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship in 2020.

Name: Iyiola Oladunjoye
Position: Microbiologist and One Health Professional
Bio: Iyiola Oladunjoye is a microbiologist with diverse experiences across the spectra of environmental, animal, and human health. He currently works as a Food Safety Coordinator at Rentokil Boecker, a multinational public health firm, and volunteers as a One Health Research Coordinator at Rouleaux Foundation. Iyiola has published 14 scientific articles on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and other One Health issues in international peer-reviewed high-impact journals. He is an AMR Insights Ambassador and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Young Ambassador of Science to Nigeria. He was a 2020 fellow of the One Health Advocacy and Mentorship (OHAM) program.
