Farmed Animal Welfare and Food Systems Research and Policy

Developing a Resource Guide and Toolkit for Sustainable AMR Solutions

Project Summary

The Farmed Animal Welfare and Food Systems Research and Policy project area serves as the central hub for OHDI’s work on advancing responsible, ethical, and sustainable food production systems through a One Health lens.

This portfolio integrates research, policy engagement, systems strengthening, and stakeholder coordination to improve animal welfare, food safety, public health, and environmental sustainability across livestock and aquaculture systems.

Our work focuses on generating evidence and practical solutions that support the transition towards humane, safe, and sustainable food systems, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). We collaborate with governments, producers, private sector actors, academia, and development partners to strengthen policy frameworks, improve on-farm practices, and promote responsible production and sourcing systems.

By linking animal welfare, food safety, environmental sustainability, and livelihoods, OHDI contributes to building resilient and ethical food systems that protect animals, safeguard human health, and support sustainable development.

Project Components

The Sustainable Impact Resource Guide and Toolkit is being developed through six key phases

1

Farmed Animal Welfare and Food Systems Research

We generate and synthesize evidence on farmed animal welfare, food safety, production systems, and sustainability across livestock and aquaculture sectors. This includes applied research, system assessments, baseline studies, evaluations, and learning initiatives that inform policy, guide interventions, and strengthen responsible food systems.

2

Farmed Animal Welfare and Food Systems Policy

We support governments and stakeholders to design, strengthen, and implement policies, standards, and guidelines that promote animal welfare, food safety, and sustainable production systems. Our work contributes to national regulations, sector guidelines, welfare frameworks, and market-based systems, including verification and compliance approaches that drive responsible practices across value chains.
