The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Scientist to conduct research on animal health and epidemiology in an interdisciplinary team of social science and biosciences researchers.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and test integrated herd health packages for small ruminants and cattle
- Implement research on PPR control: review literature, contribute to research and survey design, prepare datasets, apply modelling procedures and field test thermostable PPR vaccines
- Contribute to the development of risk maps to inform PPR control
- Collaborate closely with research partners in planning and carrying out research
- Write publications, prepare and present research findings
- Contribute to resource mobilization efforts
- Perform any other related duties as may be required
Requirements
- PhD in veterinary epidemiology, veterinary sciences or related discipline
- Experience in veterinary public health and food safety desirable
- Two to four years’ relevant experience of completing PhD
- Experience in modelling of transboundary animal diseases
- Experience in risk analysis and risk mapping
- Understanding of pastoralist systems
- Understanding and use of participatory approaches
- Knowledge of basics laboratory assays (ELISA, PCR, basic microbiology)
- Knowledge of quantitative statistical tools (STATA, R)
- Available to travel regularly nationally and internationally (especially in the Sahelian regions in West Africa)
- Fluent in English and French
Post location: The position will be based in Dakar, Senegal or Bamako, Mali.
