The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.
ILRI seeks to recruit a PhD graduate fellow to work on One CGIAR Initiative on protecting human health through a One Health approach-food safety intervention in Ethiopia to be hosted under the Animal and Human Health (AHH) program at ILRI. The AHH program seeks to effectively manage or eliminate livestock, zoonotic and food-borne diseases that matter to the poor through the generation and use of knowledge, technologies and products, leading to higher farmer incomes and better health and nutrition for consumers and livestock.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The aim of the Initiative is to protect human health by improving the prevention, detection and control of zoonoses, foodborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low- and middle-income countries. The Initiative will work in seven countries which includes Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Bangladesh and Vietnam. The successful fellow will work on an intervention program to improve food safety in Ethiopia and assess the impact on selected value chain actors of animal source foods. The fellow will be expected to participate in the following:
- Contribute to the design and implementation of a food safety intervention in selected food commodities whose aim is to bring sustainable improvement in safe production, handling, etc considering the contexts in Ethiopia or elsewhere in developing countries
- Coordinate the collection of biological samples and contribute to sample processing and laboratory analysis in microbiology.
- Undertake participatory experiments targeting food hygiene and safety improvements.
- Conduct cost-benefit analysis of food safety intervention, etc
REQUIREMENTS
The minimum requirements for the ideal candidate are as follows:
- A master’s degree in veterinary medicine or veterinary public health, public health, biology, food sciences, food technology or other relevant disciplines.
- Ability to collate and integrate various sources of epidemiological and public health data.
- Demonstrated field experience of working with diverse project partners and stakeholders (e.g., farmers and national or international organizations).
- Proficiency in using basic computer packages including word-processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and others.
- Field work experience, including management of field teams and data collection.
- Good understanding of informal food market systems in Ethiopia or East Africa.
- Knowledge of animal sourced food value chains, etc.
ELIGIBILITY
This fellowship is open to Ethiopian nationals only and it proceeds for a duration of 3 years, subject to performance and continued funding.
