Sustainable Impact and AMR Interventions

Developing a Resource Guide and Toolkit for Sustainable AMR Solutions

Project Summary

The Sustainable Impact and AMR Project is an ongoing multi-country research initiative commissioned by the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) and funded by Wellcome Trust to systematically integrate and strengthen the long-term sustainability of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) interventions. The project was conceived in response to the growing recognition and need for long-term sustainability in AMR interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It seeks to bridge this gap by developing a practical, evidence-based Resource Guide and Toolkit for integrating Sustainability in AMR Interventions, informed by global best practices and grounded in the One Health approach.

The project is led by One Health and Development Initiative (OHDI) in collaboration with Ducit Blue Foundation and Kwame Nkurumah University of Technology (KNUST). By engaging researchers, project implementers and field practitioners, the initiative explores how AMR projects can be better designed, implemented, and evaluated from inception to exit and continuity to ensure long-lasting change within human, animal, and environmental health systems.

At its core, the project emphasizes three major themes: defining what “sustainable impact” means in the context of AMR, identifying enabling factors that support long-term integration of AMR solutions, and developing actionable frameworks and indicators that guide future program design. Through this work, the project aims to build stronger, more resilient systems that can sustain AMR prevention and control efforts across diverse contexts.

The Sustainable Impact Resource Guide and Toolkit is being developed through six key phases:

Define Sustainable Impact

Establishing core concepts and definitions through systematic reviews and consultations.

Develop Frameworks & Indicators

Designing conceptual models and sustainability indicators in AMR.

Draft the Resource Guide & Toolkit
Producing a draft of the Resource Guide and Toolkit based on evidence and stakeholder insights.

Gather Feedbackt

Engaging stakeholders through focus groups, surveys, and workshops to refine the draft.

Pilot the Guide

Testing the toolkit to assess usability and practical application.

Finalize & Publish

Integrating feedback to produce the final, evidence-based version for global dissemination.
